Though I have already made a post concerning our recent study of some of David Harvey's work, I neglected to make comment on the other text concerned; by Manuel Castells, entitled "Space of Flows". In it, Castells breaks down the traditional philosophic and geographic definitions of 'space' he prefers in order to exemplify these with contemporary scenario. He uses abstract descriptions of informational, financial and other 'unseen' 'flows' which influence and link society beyond the immediacy of physical 'space' as a designer might traditionally see it. He concludes by saying (in my translation) that although there is no reason to de-centralise the capitalist model of 'the city', the efficacious nature of capitalism forces sectors of economy in to physical proximity to reduce the friction of transaction (the logical conclusion for which, he considers 'mega-cities')...
If you want to read this particular text, it can be downloaded from AAAARG.org. Would love to hear some opinions (Pete, Bernie)...

Mapping light (underground)...
Having been on a photo-aural mapping exercise down a dank and somewhat mouldy WWII munitions store today, I am glad I didn't wear my favourite shoes... Got to visit the 'white cliffs' though and caught some sunshine at the beach as well a pretty excellent fish supper... Our group consequently spent around 5hrs editing sound recordings this evening in a small Canterbury caff, nursing one coffee each so as not to be refused the power socket and wifi they were providing...
On my way back to London, I found this map in a book recommended for our current project and thought it appropriately sexy for posting. It's really, really lucid...

David Harvey
After yesterday's History and Theory session, I felt fairly despondent - realising as much as David Harvey considers there to exist a 'tripartite of space' he also considers there to be a tripartite of society. He seems to acknowledge only Capitalists/Neo-Liberals, their opposition in Marxist sympathists and the rest of the World (i.e. the Public)...
He seems to think the public can dissolve current unstable capitalism but through the education provided by heavily socialist-leaners.
I'll further explore his solutions to the re-stabilisation of our economic systems which he (as do I) consider unsustainable in anything more than the immediate future...
Will post a quick summation of what I find out about his solution but should anyone want to hear his bit, check out the video below (should help explain current world financial situation - Louise)...
