Though I have already made a post concerning our recent study of some of David Harvey's work, I neglected to make comment on the other text concerned; by Manuel Castells, entitled "Space of Flows". In it, Castells breaks down the traditional philosophic and geographic definitions of 'space' he prefers in order to exemplify these with contemporary scenario. He uses abstract descriptions of informational, financial and other 'unseen' 'flows' which influence and link society beyond the immediacy of physical 'space' as a designer might traditionally see it. He concludes by saying (in my translation) that although there is no reason to de-centralise the capitalist model of 'the city', the efficacious nature of capitalism forces sectors of economy in to physical proximity to reduce the friction of transaction (the logical conclusion for which, he considers 'mega-cities')...
If you want to read this particular text, it can be downloaded from AAAARG.org. Would love to hear some opinions (Pete, Bernie)...
